IO SCATTO LA LUCE

When I was once asked, “what do you photograph?”, I was surprised by the question. After thinking about it, my answer was, “I photograph light.”

I believe that it is ultimately my fascination with light as a subject matter that has made me a photographer. Specifically, the way in which light envelops objects and gives them form and ultimately meaning.

Light can take on infinitely variable characteristics. Its direction, intensity, contrast, color, and more are unrepeatable. As a photographer, it is a privilege to be able to capture its forms and make use of them to define a certain “reality.” However, I am less interested in documenting reality and more interested in creating a specific fiction. I achieve this not by manipulating objects, but by finding the right angle and atmosphere. While I admire the work of photographers who construct a scenario and then shoot it, I have always been more interested in discovering a mysterious spot consisting of a particular way in which its parts are organized and shooting it as it is. Light is always the guiding factor that creates its distinct atmosphere.

Even after thirty years, I still feel as though I am on the seashore when contemplating light. I still have the whole sea to discover. My search has always been for the enjoyment of light in the same way that musicians enjoy and use sound. If sound is light, then shadow is silence.

“Io scatto la luce” is an ongoing project of directly captured photos taken mainly in Italy. It consists of large images (60X90 cm) printed on 82X112 cm fine-art paper.
